Exploring Altar Symbolism

Altars are the heart of many religious spaces, filled with symbols that represent values, stories, and beliefs. For children, exploring these symbols through coloring can be an engaging and meaningful experience.

Our altar coloring sheets highlight these symbols, such as the cross, the responsorial psalm books, the tabernacle, and the ambo. As children color these symbols, they can learn their meanings and the roles they play in worship services. For instance, the cross reminds us of Jesus' sacrifice, while the tabernacle signifies the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

The Cross

The cross is a powerful symbol of Christianity, representing the sacrifice and love of Jesus Christ. Our altar coloring sheets feature crosses in various styles, from simple to intricate designs, inviting children to explore their creativity while understanding the depth of this symbol.

Encourage children to think about the meaning of the cross as they color. They can even create their own border around the cross, using designs that remind them of the love and hope it represents.

The Tabernacle

The tabernacle is a sacred vessel that houses the consecrated Eucharist in churches. Our altar coloring sheets showcase the tabernacle with its unique appearance, often covered with a veil and surrounded by candles.

As children color the tabernacle, they can learn about its significance. They can also create a beautiful symbol to represent the presence of God, such as a, using colors that signify different attributes of God, like red for love or blue for trustworthiness.

Discovering Different Altar Styles

Just as art and architecture vary across cultures, altars also exhibit diverse styles. From Gothic and Baroque to Modern and Contemporary, each style brings a unique aesthetic to sacred spaces. Our altar coloring sheets offer a glimpse into these diverse designs, encouraging children to explore and appreciate the rich history of altar art.

By coloring these diverse altar styles, children can learn about the evolution of religious art and architecture. They can also develop an appreciation for different artistic expressions, fostering cultural understanding and creativity.

Gothic Altars

Gothic altars are characterized by their pointed arches, intricate carvings, and ornate decoration. Our Gothic altar coloring sheet offers children a chance to explore this style, with its rich details and symbolism.

As children color the Gothic altar, encourage them to notice the elaborate designs and the use of light and dark to create depth. They can also imagine the sense of awe and reverence that the original altar may have instilled in those who worshipped there.

Modern Altars

Modern altars often incorporate simple, clean lines and a focus on minimalism. Our Modern altar coloring sheet invites children to explore this style, which emphasizes the essential nature of the altar while leaving room for personal interpretation.

When coloring the Modern altar, encourage children to think about the simplicity and purposefulness of the design. They can experiment with different colors and patterns to personalize their altar, learning that even in simplicity, there's room for creativity and connection.
