Before we dive into the lions' den, let's ensure we have the right tools. You'll need:

  • sketching pencils ( HB, 2B, 4B)

  • paints (acrylic or watercolor) in the following colors: red, orange, yellow, brown, black, and white

Sketching Our Lion

A good drawing starts with a solid foundation. Let's create a basic sketch of our angry lion using simple shapes.

Start with an oval for the head and a smaller oval for the snout. Add two circles for the eyes and a large U-shape for the mouth. Sketch the mane using wavy lines. Next, draw a simple body using an elongated oval. Add legs and a long tail. Our sketch is ready! Using a 2B pencil, start tracing over your sketch to define the lines.

Drawing the Lion's Head and Mane

With a 4B pencil, begin shading the lion's head using circular motions. Apply more pressure on areas where you want darker shades to build contrast and volume. Remember, less is more when it comes to shading. We're creating an impression, not a solid black shape.

A lion's mane is a powerful feature. Using the wavy lines as a guide, shade the mane with short, wispy strokes. For a more dramatic effect, try using an HB pencil for lighter shades and gradually switch to a 4B pencil for darker areas. You can also use your eraser to create small highlights and add dimension.

Sketching the Details

Now that our basic shapes are shaded, let's add some details!

Draw the whiskers using short, curved lines. Add the claws and toes on the paws and the tip of the tail. Sketch the tuft of hairs on the lion's ears. For the nose, create a triangular shape with an upside-down V-shape at the base. Draw a small line horizontally across the nose for the separation of the nostrils.

Coloring Our Angry Lion

Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for! It's time to bring our angry lion to life with color!

Let's start with the base colors. For the lion's body, use a light brown mixed with a touch of red to create a warm, fiery hue. Paint the mane with bright oranges and yellows, blending them together to create a rich, golden color. Cover the head and body with one or two layers of your base color, allowing it to dry completely.

Adding Depth with Shadows

Our angry lion is ready for his close-up! Using a dark brown, start painting shadows on the underside of the lion's body, the tip of the nose, and the edges of the mane. Add more layers for deeper shadows, making sure to blend them smoothly.

To give our lion's features intensity, use black to paint the inside of the ears and the tuft of hair. For the eyes, paint the pupils black, leaving a small white highlight. Then, paint a thin layer of yellow around the eyes, followed by a larger layer of orange to create a fiery glow.

Creating Realistic Fur and Highlights

The secret to creating realistic fur lies in layering. Using a lighter shade of brown mixed with a touch of white, paint small tufts of fur on the lion's body. Overlap them, allowing some of the darker layers to show through. This creates the appearance of individual hairs and adds texture to our drawing.

To create highlights on the mane, use a mixture of white and yellow. Paint small, wispy strokes, focusing on the areas where the light would naturally hit, like the very tips of the mane. For extra realism, add small, scattered white dots to represent individual hairs catching the light.

Stand back and admire your amazing handiwork! You've just created a stunning, angry lion drawing filled with vibrant color. Perfect for showcasing in your portfolio or giving as a gift. Now, don't stop at just one – let your creativity roar with more masterpieces!
