Understanding the Brazilian Flag

The Brazilian flag, designed by Députalo Raimundo Teotônio Medrado, is a beautiful representation of Brazil's past, present, and future. It consists of a green circle intersecting with a white rhombus, all bordered in yellow. The emblems on the flag, including a winged lion, a banderole, and a scroll, hold significant historical value.

The Brazilian flag's color scheme is unique and symbolic. The green circle symbolizes the House of Braganza, the legitimate monarchy claimed by the early Brazilian revolutionaries. Meanwhile, the yellow border represents the House of Habsburg, which had made a competing claim to Brazil's throne.

Coloring the Green Circle

The green circle, or disk, is one of the main features of the Brazilian flag. To color this section, children can use any shade of green they prefer, from dark forest green to light lime green. The circle symbolizes the alliance between Brazil and Portugal, the former mother country, and the fact that Brazil was the only Portuguese colony to become independent peacefully.

As kids color the green circle, they can learn about the federation's green and gold colors, which originally represented the union between Rio de Janeiro (then the federal capital) and the province of Guanabara. This history lesson can be an engaging way to teach children about geography and politics while having fun.

Coloring the White Rhombus

The white rhombus (or diamond shape) is centered in the green circle. Children can fill this section in with any white color, from the brightest optic white to the softest cream color. The white rhombus, much like the green circle, can be seen as a symbol of peace, stability, and the country's independence.
