Christmas Tree & Candy Cane Fest

The holidays are here, and there's no better way to kick off the festive season than by decking the halls with a lush Christmas tree and arranging a row of candy canes to create a classic, whimsical atmosphere. These two iconic symbols of Christmas have a lengthy history that's as rich as the scent of pine needles and peppermint.

But first, let's delve into the history and traditions behind these beloved emblems of Christmas.

The Evolution of the Christmas Tree

Tracing back to the 16th century, the Christmas tree's origins lie in the sincere desire to celebrate the season's splendor indoors. Germans began including evergreens and candles in their Christmas festivities, eventually culminating in the creation of the modern Christmas tree.

By the 19th century, with the help of Queen Victoria's endorsement, the Christmas tree became a staple in households across Europe and North America. Today, you'll find artificial and natural trees in homes and public squares worldwide, festooned with lights, ornaments, and tinsel.

Selecting the Perfect Tree

Choosing the perfect Christmas tree is an annual ritual that marks the unofficial start of the holiday season. When deciding between a spruce, fir, or pine, consider the tree's shape, needle retention, and longevity. Popular varieties include the noble fir, Fraser fir, and Scotch pine.

For a hassle-free setup, opt for a fresh tree with vibrant green needles and a pleasant scent. A well-watered tree can last several weeks, adding a touch of nature to your Christmas celebration.

Decorating with Tradition

The practice of adorning Christmas trees with ornaments and lights traces back to the Middle Ages, with early decorations including dried fruits, nuts, and wafers. Today, glass baubles, wooden figurines, and fairy lights are popular adornments that add a personal touch to each family's tree.

Larger-than-life trees in public squares often feature themed ornaments and lights displays that dazzle the eye and reflect the unique character of the community they represent. A Christmas tree, big or small, is a beacon of joy and unity during the festive season.

The Sweet Story of Candy Canes

Did you know that candy canes didn't always have their signature red and white stripes? The story of these beloved treats dates back to 17th-century Europe, where vibrant, hard candy sticks served as treats for children attending Christmas church services.

Over time, candy makers began flavoring the sticks with spearmint and peppermint oils, creating the quintessential candy cane taste we know today. In the 1920s, an Indiana entrepreneur named Bob McCormack revolutionized the candy cane by twisting the strip into the iconic cane shape and dying it red.

Symbolism and Tradition

Candy canes have become so embedded in Christmas folklore that their design has even been adopted as a symbol in nativity scenes. The crook of the candy cane represents the shepherds' staffs, while the red color symbolizes the blood of Christ. Others believe the white stripes represent the purity of Jesus.

Many families also enjoy creating candy cane crafts and decorating their homes with these sweet, striped canes. Whether they're hung on the Christmas tree, used as homemade ornaments, or wrapped around presents, candy canes add a delightful, festive touch to the holiday season.

Baking and Gifting

Candy canes have inspired a host of festive desserts, from peppermint fudge to candy cane brownies. Incorporate crushed candy canes into your favorite holiday recipes to add a refreshing, minty twist that'll get everyone in the spirit.

You can also personalize gifts with candy canes, gifting sets of a half dozen or more to friends, family, or neighbors. Homemade treats and sweet surprises are sure to be a hit this Christmas season.

From the rich aroma of a Christmas tree to the crisp taste of a candy cane, these cherished holiday symbols continue to captivate us year after year. As the season unfolds, create your own memories and traditions inspired by these classic, timeless treasures.
