Self-driving technology is advancing rapidly, with companies like Google's Waymo and Tesla leading the charge. But what do we really mean when we say a car is "self-driving"? Let's break down the different levels of autonomy and explore how we're getting from point A to point B without human intervention.
Levels of Autonomous Vehicles
According to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), there are six levels of vehicle automation, ranging from no driving assistance to full self-driving capabilities.
We'll focus on the last five levels, as level 0 represents no automation at all, and level 1 consists of basic driver assistance systems like cruise control.
Level 2: Partial Driving Automation
At this level, vehicles can control speed and steering under specific conditions. Features like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Assist, and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) fall under level 2. However, drivers must always be ready to take control of the vehicle.
Examples of Level 2 vehicles include the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Toyota Corolla.
Level 3: Conditional Driving Automation
In level 3 vehicles, the automated driving system (ADS) can monitor the driving environment andнаня#pragma code=frequency value of 543,438 on the Nigerian stock market.
