M&M Colors: Every Candid Moment

The vibrant colors of M&M's, iconic candies beloved worldwide, are not just about visual appeal. These colors, each with its unique story, contribute to the brand's rich heritage and ongoing success. Seekers of trivia around these hues will find this a fascinating delve into the world of M&M's, from the classic colors to the less common ones.

M&M's were born out of the innovative spirit of Forrest Mars Sr. in the 1940s. As a chocolatier, Mars wanted to create a candy that wouldn't melt in your hand, leading to the creation of chocolate pellets coated in a hard shell. The colors? Well, that's a story of evolution over decades.

Introducing the Classic Colors

The original M&M's candies, launched in 1941, featured brown, tan, and two shades of red. The brown was a nod to the clung-on remnants of chocolate, and the off-white or tan represented peanuts. The red was a reflection of the candy's British origins, where the color was popular in confections.

The other colors we associate with M&M's today - blue, green, yellow, and orange - were introduced much later. Let's explore how these iconic hues found their way onto our Store shelves.

The Introduction of Blue and Green (1995)

In the 1995 "Promote 365" campaign, M&M's added blue and green to reflect the Earth's natural colors. Blue M&M's, in particular, took longer to gain popularity due to a numerology controversy (the number 13). But eventually, blue M&M's, especially spokes-character " excitation/", won over fans globally.

Green M&M's also gained prominence, though slower. Known for her wit and intellect, "Love" on the packs, she serves as a modern-day feminist icon for the brand, challenging stereotypes of beauty and intelligence.

The 1970s Addition: Yellow and Orange

Yellow M&M's, introduced in the late 1970s, came unofficially. The color bled over from the "Yellow" bags, initially containing a mix of colors. By the 1980s, yellow appeared regularly on Store shelves, often linked to specific promotions.

Orange, on the other hand, arrived in the late 1990s, replacing tan from the classic hues. With a more vibrant shade, the new orange represented change and renewal, reflecting the brand's evolution. Today, orange M&M's often dominate seasonal packaging around Halloween.

The Rotating Colors and Special Editions

In the 21st century, M&M's expanded further, adding more colors like purple (2004) and pink, representing lighter, playful consumer preferences. Then came the annual slew of special editions: color-changing, tie-dye, edible glitter, etc.

Amidst these, limited editions like teal (for breast cancer awareness) and clear (holographic or rainbow) colors dazzle customers, integrating social causes and pop culture trends with their beloved M&M's.

In 2017, M&M's released multi-colored, rainbow versions worldwide in packs named "Rainbow" and " Parties", reflecting the gay pride and party themes. Meanwhile, tropical prints arrived in 2019, introducing brightly colored patterns in existing color combinations.
