The Life and Times of David

Born into a family of shepherds, David was the youngest of eight brothers. Despite his humble beginnings, David's courage and skill were evident even in his teenage years. He demonstrated his prowess by killing the Philistine giant, Goliath, with just a slingshot and a stone. This feat caught the attention of King Saul, who invited David to join his court.

David's musical talents won him the affection of Saul's son, Jonathan, and the love of Saul's daughter, Michal. However, Saul grew jealous of David's popularity and integrity, attempting to kill him on multiple occasions. This led David to embark on a seventeen-year journey as a fugitive, leading his own army and protecting the interests of the Israelites.

David's Rise to Power

During his time in hiding, David's reputation as a brave and just leader grew. He successfully defended Israel's borders and inspired loyalty among his followers. By the time Saul and his son Jonathan were killed in battle against the Philistines, David had already been anointed king by the tribe of Judah.

David then traveled to Hebron, where he was crowned king over the house of Judah. He reigned there for seven and a half years, governing wisely and with integrity. Afterward, the elders of Israel finally anointed him king over all Israel, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the history of his people.

David's Accomplishments as King

As king of a united Israel, David established Jerusalem as his capital, defeated remaining enemies, and centralized his power. He also initiated the construction of the Temple in Jerusalem, a project passed on to his son, Solomon, upon his death.

David's reign is considered one of the most significant in Israel's history. He forged a powerful kingdom, established a lasting legacy, and demonstrated a deep faith in God. These accomplishments and more await your child's artistic touch on our "David Becomes King" coloring page.
