Jesus Resurrection for Kids: Simple, Easy Explanations
Imagine you're playing a game of hide and seek with your friends. You close your eyes while they find a place to hide. After a while, you call out, "Ready or not, here I come!" You start looking for them, and even though you think you've looked everywhere, suddenly, you find your friend hiding in a spot you hadn't thought of before. That's what it was like when Jesus' friends thought they'd looked everywhere for Him, and then, suddenly, they found Him again, but in a way they hadn't expected – He had risen from the dead! Let's learn about this amazing story.
Jesus' resurrection, or rising from the dead, is one of the most important stories in the Bible, which is a special book that Christians follow. It's a story that might seem hard to understand, but let's try to make it easier to grasp by breaking it down into parts.
The Story So Far
The story of Jesus' life, miracles, and teachings is like a really exciting storybook. He had many friends, or disciples, who followed Him and learned from Him. They loved Him very much. They were together on a journey to Jerusalem, where something very sad happened. Jesus was arrested and put on trial, even though He hadn't done anything wrong. His friends were very upset and worried about Him.
Like many people who lived during that time, Jesus' friends believed in something called resurrection. They believed that one day, when the promised Savior, the Messiah, came, He would save people from their sins and give them eternal life. This meant that even though people would die, they could live again, happily, with God in heaven forever. So, although Jesus' friends were sad, they still hoped for a miracle.
Jesus' Death on the Cross
Before we learn about Jesus' resurrection, we need to understand what happened before it. Jesus was sentenced to die on a cross, which was a very sad and painful way to die. His friends watched from a distance, feeling helpless. Jesus was in tremendous pain, both physically and emotionally. He cried out to God, asking why He had forsaken Him, but He still forgave the people who hurt Him. Finally, Jesus died, and His body was taken down from the cross. His friends were heartbroken, but they did something very important – they took care of Jesus' body and prepared it for burial.
Do you know what a tomb is? It's a place where people bury the bodies of their loved ones who have died. Jesus' friends put Him in a tomb, which was a cave-like room with stones to close the entrance. They rolled a big stone in front of the opening to keep it shut and left to go home and rest.
Guards at the Tomb
The religious leaders, who were the ones who put Jesus on trial, were scared that Jesus' disciples might come and steal His body to make it seem like He had risen from the dead. So, they asked the Roman authorities to place guards at the tomb. These guards were soldiers whose job it was to watch over important places and protect them. They sat at the tomb, making sure nobody could get inside or steal anything.
Perhaps you've watched a movie or a TV show with guards like this before. They might have seemed very tough and strong, but they couldn't stop what was about to happen. They couldn't stop Jesus from rising from the dead!
Jesus Resurrects!
It was very early in the morning, and some women, who were Jesus' friends, went to the tomb. They had brought some spices with them to use to anoint Jesus' body – this is a respectful way to prepare a dead body before burying it. They didn't know what had happened when they arrived at the tomb. Suddenly, there was a huge earthquake, and an angel from heaven appeared! The guards were so scared that they fainted. The angel rolled away the stone from the tomb's entrance and sat on it. The women were terrified, but the angel spoke to them.
Do you know what an angel is? Angels are spiritual beings who are like God's messengers. They help and protect people. The angel told the women not to be afraid because Jesus was no longer in the tomb. He had risen from the dead, just like He had said He would! The angel reminded them that Jesus had been captured in the garden of Gethsemane and asked them to tell His disciples the good news. The women ran away from the tomb, filled with fear and great joy, and began to tell others what they had seen and heard.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
Mary Magdalene was one of Jesus' closest friends. She was at the tomb that morning with the other women. While the other women went to tell the disciples what had happened, Mary Magdalene stayed behind, crying. She looked inside the tomb and saw two angels, but she didn't recognize them at first. She told them that she was looking for Jesus' body and that someone had taken it away. She started to leave, feeling sad and frustrated, when suddenly, she heard someone call her name. It was Jesus! Mary Magdalene was overjoyed, and she hugged Him, but Jesus told her not to touch Him yet because He had not yet gone back to His Father in heaven. He asked her to go and tell His brothers and disciples that He would meet them in Galilee, which was a region in the northeast of Jerusalem. Mary Magdalene rushed to tell the others the wonderful news that she had seen the risen Jesus!
Can you imagine how happy and excited Mary Magdalene must have been? She had seen Jesus, alive and well, after thinking He was gone forever. Even though she couldn't give Him a hug, she couldn't wait to tell His friends that He was back! She reminded them of what Jesus had said, and they believed her because they knew how much she loved Jesus and how truthful she was.
Jesus Meets with His Disciples
That evening, some of Jesus' disciples were together, hiding in a room because they were afraid of being arrested too. Suddenly, Jesus appeared right in front of them, saying, "Peace be with you!" At first, they didn't believe their eyes and thought they were seeing a ghost. But Jesus showed them His hands and feet, which had puncture wounds from the nails used to crucify Him. He also showed them that He wasn't a ghost because a ghost doesn't have a physical body. Then, He ate some food with them to prove that He was truly alive! The disciples were overjoyed and believed that Jesus had risen from the dead.
Do you remember how sometimes you might feel sad or frustrated because you think something good won't ever happen? Like when you're playing with your favorite toys, and you drop one of them, and it breaks, or when you're trying to solve a difficult puzzle, and you can't seem to find the right pieces. Those were the feelings Jesus' disciples had. But Jesus showed them that even though He had died, He was still with them, and everything would be okay. They felt so much better, and their hearts were filled with happiness and hope.
Isn't it amazing to hear about Jesus' resurrection? It's a story that can give us hope and encouragement, just like it did for Jesus' disciples. Just like how Mary Magdalene couldn't wait to share the good news, we too can tell others about Jesus' love and compassion for us. If you ever feel sad or lonely, remember that Jesus is always there for you, just like He was for His disciples. This story is just the beginning of many more amazing things that happened after Jesus' resurrection. Keep exploring the Bible to learn more about Jesus and His adventures with His friends!
