Understanding Flounder's Anatomy

Flounder, like most fish, has a streamlined body designed for swimming efficiently. He has a rounded head, a wide mouth, and large, expressive eyes. His orange body is marked with three white stripes, and he has a distinctive pointed fin on his back.

Drawing Flounder's Body Shape

Start by drawing an oval for Flounder's body. Flounder is a round, almost pudgy, fish, so draw a full, plump oval. For the length, make the bottom of the oval slightly longer than the top, to create the appearance of a fish that is swimming horizontally.

To give your Flounder drawing dimension, lightly sketch in some guidelines for where the head, eyes, and fins will go. Remember, Flounder has a rather large head compared to his body, and this will help you get the proportions right.

Adding Details to Flounder's Body

Once you have the basic body shape down, it's time to start adding details. Begin with Flounder's mouth. Draw a small, wide 'U' shape above the middle of your oval. This will be Flounder's smiling, open-mouthed expression. Don't make it too big, as Flounder is a friendly fish, not a grotesque one!

Next, add Flounder's eyes. Draw two small, black, almond-shaped eyes just above the mouth. Flounder has big, round eyes, so make sure they're not too small. Finally, add Flounder's distinctive three white stripes to his orange body. Start with the middle stripe, drawing a thin line from the top of the head down to the base of the body. Then, add two smaller stripes on either side of the middle stripe.

Illustrating Flounder's Fins and Tails

Now that you have Flounder's body and face down, it's time to add his fins and tails. This will give your drawing movement and bring Flounder to life.

Start with Flounder's pectoral fins. These are the fins along the sides of his body. Draw two small, crescent-shaped fins on either side of his body, just below the stripes. Make sure they're positioned at a slight angle to give the illusion that Flounder is swimming.

Drawing Flounder's Back Fin

Next, illustrate Flounder's distinctive back fin. This fin is pointed and extends upward from the top of his body. To draw this, simply draw a triangles shape at the top rear of Flounder's body, pointing upward. This fin should be relatively small and delicate, so don't make it too large.

Finally, draw Flounder's caudal fin, or his tail. This fin is also quite distinctive, with two long points that curve downward. To draw this, start with two long, curved lines extending from the bottom of Flounder's body. Then, connect them with a thin line at the bottom to create the tail's shape.

Adding the Finishing Touches

Now that you have Flounder's basic body and fins drawn, it's time to add the final details that will bring your drawing to life. Start with Flounder's scales. These are tiny and difficult to draw individually, so instead, use light, wavy lines to suggest their presence. Start at the top of Flounder's head and draw these wavy lines down to the bottom of his body, following the contours of his body.

Next, add Flounder's gills. These are simple, small 'V' shapes on either side of Flounder's head, just behind his eyes. Finally, don't forget to add a small, black dot to each of Flounder's eyes to give them depth. Now, your Flounder drawing is complete!

As you continue to practice your Flounder drawings, don't be afraid to experiment with different styles and techniques. You might try drawing Flounder in a cartoon style, or even try to draw him in a more realistic manner, mimicking the style of the Finding Nemo movie. The world of underwater art is waiting for you!
