What is a Hand Turkey & Its History

A hand turkey, also known as a 'thumbkin' or 'thumb turkey', is a fun craft project or object made by tracing around a hand and then decorating it as a turkey. This simple yet entertaining activity has been around for generations, with its origins dating back to the 1960s. It was popularized by teachers who found it to be an engaging and educational way for kids to learn about the Thanksgiving tradition.

With its simple design and endless decorative possibilities, the hand turkey has become a staple in schools, homes, and even offices during the autumnal Thanksgiving season. It's not only an enjoyable activity but also a wonderfulDIY decoration that can brighten up your space with its colorful and creative flair.

The Basics of Creating a Hand Turkey

Creating a hand turkey is child's play, literally! All you need is a piece of paper, a pen or pencil, and a hand (preferably yours or your kid's). Begin by placing your hand flat on the paper, with your fingers spread wide. Trace around your hand, making sure to include your thumb to form the turkey's body. Once you're done, remove your hand to reveal your turkey's outline.

From here, the sky's the limit! You can let your creativity flow by adding features like a snood, wattle, eyes, and feet. You can also experiment with different colors, patterns, and materials. Some even go the extra mile by dressing up their hand turkeys as superheroes, holiday characters, or even outer space aliens!

Hand Turkey Variations & Ideas

Ever tried creating a 'hand pumpkin' or a 'hand snowman'?
