Mastering Adobe Illustrator empower us to create sophisticated designs with ease. One common technique is coloring specific parts of a letter or text, allowing for emphasis, hierarchy, or creative accents. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to color part of a letter in Illustrator.

Before we dive in, ensure you understand the basic tools like the Selection Tool (V) to pick text elements, and the Type on a Path Tool (T) to create and manage text along paths. Familiarize yourself with the Character panel (Alt + Ctrl + T) to customize your font's style and size.

Setting Up Your Text

Start by creating a new Illustrator document and choosing a font. Type out your desired text using the Type on a Path Tool. For this example, we'll use the phrase "Adobe Illustrator".

To prepare your text for coloring, ensure each letter or desired portion of a letter is on its own path. This can be achieved by using the Scissors Tool (C) to cut letters apart, or by typing each letter individually with the Type on a Path Tool.

Selecting Individual Letters for Coloring

The Selection Tool is your primary tool here. Click on the letter you want to color. If you want to select multiple letters or parts of letters, hold down the Shift key to add to the selection, or press and drag the Bounding Box around the desired elements.

To select a portion of a letter, use the Direct Selection Arrow Tool (A). This tool selects anchor points, which are the corners forming the letter shape. Click on an anchor point to select it and its associated path. Holding down the Shift key allows you to select multiple anchor points.

Filling a Letter with Color

After selecting a letter or part of a letter, access the Color panel (Window > Color > Color). From here, pick a color or create a custom one. With your color selected, go to Object > Fill >'te Selected Item'. This fills the selected letter or portion with your chosen color.

Tip: If you want to fill a closed shape, make sure to double-check that all anchor points are selected. Unclosed or partially selected paths may only color the visible parts, creating unexpected results.

Stroking Letters with Color

To change the outline color of a letter without affecting its fill, use the Color panel's stroke color picker. Objects > Stroke > 'te Selected Item' applies the chosen stroke color to the selected letter or letter portion.

For a thicker or thinner stroke, adjust the Stroke panel's (Window > Stroke) width slider. To change stroke type (e.g., solid, dashed, etc.), press the down arrow next to the width slider, and choose your desired style.

Coloring Text along a Path

Sometimes, you may want to color text that's not broken up, such as text along a path. This can be achieved using the Character panel's Text Fill and Text Stroke options. Select a color for each, and it applies the color over the entire text, regardless of individual letters.

To adjust stroke and fill, use the Character panel's options for 'r' (Remove), 'a' (Add to Current), and 'x' (Exchange stroke and fill). You can also adjust font size and style within the same panel for more control over your text.

Remember to experiment with different colors, strokes, and fills to find the perfect look for your project. With practice, coloring parts of letters in Adobe Illustrator becomes second nature.
