How to Create Paper Lily Flowers Step by Step
Transforming regular paper into elegant lily flowers might seem daunting, but with a bit of patience and creativity, you too can craft these charming, decorative blooms. Paper lilies are an excellent DIY project, perfect for floral arrangements, gift wrapping, or even wearable adornments. Let's dive into our step-by-step guide to help you create your own stunning paper lilies.
Before we begin, gather your materials: A4 or heavier weight paper, scissors, glue, a ruler, and a pencil. You'll also need a small paintbrush for the glue and, optionally, markers or paint for added color. This project is beginner-friendly, so don't worry if you're not a paper crafting pro yet.
Creating the Lily Petals
Lily petals are the core of our paper blooms, and we'll start by creating these in bulk.
Measure and cut your paper into 3x6cm or 2x4cm rectangles. The size depends on the desired scale of your lilies. A larger rectangle will result in bigger petals, and thus, larger lilies.
Curling the Petals
To achieve that lifelike lily petal curl, we'll use a simple trick with our scissors. Hold the petal vertically, place the scissor blade along one edge, and carefully bend the petal upwards. This creates a natural curve.
Repeat this process with all your petals. Remember, you'll need about 12 petals to create one lily flower, so prepare a good number in advance.
Painting the Petals (Optional)
For added color and realism, paint your petals using markers or acrylic paint. Create a mix of tones, mimicking real lilies, and let them dry before proceeding.
Alternatively, you can use both sides of your cut petals for a bicolor effect, painting one side white (or your base color) and leaving the other side untouched for a natural cream color.
Assembling the Lilies
Now that we have our petals ready, it's time to assemble the paper lilies.
Start by laying out six petals in a circle, overlapping them slightly to create a funnel shape. This will form the base of your lily.
Creating the Lily Stamen
For the lily's stamen, cut out a small oval or kidney shape from a contrasting color of paper. Alternatively, you can create a stylized stamen using green construction paper or cardstock.
Pro tip: Flush-cut scissors or a paper punch can help create cleaner, more uniform stamen shapes.
Adding the Final Touches
Glue the stamen onto the center of your petal circle. Apply a thin line of glue along the inner edge of each petal, then attach them to the center one by one, slightly overlapping each petal to create a full flower shape.
Allow the glue to dry completely before using your paper lilies in an arrangement or threading them onto a headband for a dramatic hairpiece.
