1. **Seed beads**: These are the foundation of your Kandi. You can find them in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. We recommend starting with the classic 8/0 seed beads.

Bead Selection

When choosing your beads, consider both color and size. For hand stars, smaller beads (like size 15 or size 11) are typically used. And while plain beads are great for beginners, you might want to explore specialty beads like fire polish, metallic, or 'tiered' beads for a more unique look.

Don't forget to consider the length of your Kandi! The more beads you use, the longer your piece will be. A good rule of thumb is to start with around 60-80 beads for a standard length hand star.

Other Essentials

Once you've selected your beads, you'll also need:

For the purposes of this tutorial, we'll use the 'star' shape as our inspiration. You can, of course, create any shape you like once you're familiar with the basic techniques!

Getting Started

The first step is to thread your beading needle with about 24" of beading thread. Knot the end, then cut off any excess thread. Start by picking up 5 beads.

AD

Next, form a loop by bringing the needle through the center of the 5th bead, then going back through the 1st bead. Pull the thread taut to set the loop. This is the beginning of your hand star's first point!

Creating the Star Shape

Now, you'll continue adding beads to create the star shape. For each new point, pick up 4 beads, then loop them onto the previous point. Repeat this process until you have all 5 points of your star.

Tip: To create a more symmetrical star, try picking up 1 extra bead for the 3rd point. This can help ensure that your star has an even, balanced shape.

Finishing Your Kandi Hand Star

Once all 5 points are complete, it's time to finish your Kandi hand star. To do this, weave in and out of the beads, pulling the thread taut as you go. This will cinch the star together and create a secure, finished look.

When you're satisfied with the shape and tension of your star, cut the thread close to the last bead, then tie a secure knot to finish it off.

Adding a Clasp or Bead Cap (optional)

If you want to attach your Kandi hand star to a bracelet, ankle cuff, or other accessory, you can add a clasp or bead cap. To do this, simply thread the clasp or cap onto your beading thread before adding your beads, then secure it in place when you've finished your star.

That's it! You've now created your own Kandi hand star. Wear it with pride, and remember that your Kandi is a symbol of the love and energy you poured into creating it.

Now that you've mastered the basics of Kandi making, why not try creating your own unique designs? The Kandi community is all about self-expression and creativity, so let your imagination run wild! And as you continue to make your own Kandi, remember to always 'PLUR' - Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect - the guiding principles of the Kandi community.
