"Mario's Colorful Run: Printable Color Sheets"

Have you ever attempted the seemingly simple yet notoriously challenging "Mario Color Sheet" run? This speedrunning technique, popularized by the Super Mario 64 community, is a testament to the game's vast array of secrets and the dedication of its players. Let's dive into the depths of this color-coded phenomenon and explore the strategies, techniques, and history behind one of Super Mario 64's most iconic feats.

The "Mario Color Sheet" run, often abbreviated as MCS, is a speedrunning category inaugurated by the speedrunning community to document and compare attempts at completing Super Mario 64 in the shortest time possible, with a specific color palette applied throughout the game. This color palette, known as the "Mario Color Sheet," consists of Mario's classic red overalls and cap, a stark contrast to the usual green and black attire in Super Mario 64.

The Origin and Purpose of the Mario Color Sheet Run

The Mario Color Sheet run's origins lie in the attempt to document full-speedrun attempts consistently. Before its inception, players would complete levels as fast as possible, often restarting or using glitches to do so. The MCS run standardized these attempts, requiring players to start a new file, complete all 120 stars in order, and maintain the original Mario color palette throughout.

The purpose is twofold: firstly, it allows for direct comparison between players' times. Secondly, it pushes the limits of players' creativity and skill, as they must find faster and more efficient routes through each level while adhering to the strict rules.

The Rules: What Makes an MCS Run Valid?

To qualify as a valid Mario Color Sheet run, a few rules must be followed:

• All 120 stars must be collected, with no levels skipped or starred ahead of time.
• The original Mario color palette must be maintained throughout the entire run; no color changes or changing of attire.
• No glitches or specific item manipulation techniques (like ASM or Halfcap glitches) can be used.
• The run must start on a fresh, star-free save file, and the game must be completed without pausing or resetting.

Strategies and Techniques: Mastering the MCS Run

Mastering the Mario Color Sheet run requires a deep understanding of Super Mario 64's physics, level layouts, and item placements. Here are some strategies and techniques employed by top MCS runners:

1. Level route planning: Runners meticulously plan their route through each level, aiming to minimize backtracking and optimize star collection.
2. Wall kicks and long jumps: Utilizing wall kicks and precise jumps allows runners to access otherwise inaccessible areas and skip sections of levels.
3. Mario's moveset mastery: Runners must be proficient in Mario's full repertoire of moves, including ground pounds, long jumps, and wall jumps, to navigate levels quickly.
