The custom of wearing poppies to commemorate soldiers began after World War I. It became synonymous with the bloodshed of war and was immortalized in the poem "In Flanders Fields" by Canadian soldier Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.

The use of poppies became widespread in the United States in 1920, mainly through the efforts of the National American Legion. They adopted the symbolic red poppy as their official memorial flower and asked all Americans to wear one during Memorial Day as a way to honor the war dead.
