Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week, commemorates Jesus Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The theme is consistently rich with symbolism, from the palm branches that the people laid before Jesus to the donkey he rode. Today, this historic event is celebrated worldwide, often marked with processions and distributions of palm leaves, which give the day its name.

Symbolism of Palm Sunday

The symbols of Palm Sunday carry profound religious significance. Each element portrayed in processions or medalions tells a story of faith and devotion. Let's delve into two primary symbols and their meanings.

Palm Branches

Palm branches are the most recognizable symbol of Palm Sunday, symbolizing victory, peace, and triumph. In the Bible, crowds waved palm branches and cloaks as Jesus entered Jerusalem, hailing him as a king (John 12:13). By shading Jesus with palm fronds, the people signified their allegiance and support.

Coloring palm branches can be an engaging activity for kids, helping them understand and appreciate the symbol's significance. Our Palm Sunday coloring sheet emphasizes palm branches, allowing children to visualize and connect with the story.

The Donkey

The donkey or the colt symbolizes humility, obedience, and Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem as a king of peace (Matthew 21:1-9). In ancient times, a king would ride a horse into battle, but Jesus rode a donkey, a beast of burden, signifying his peaceful intentions.

Including a donkey in your Palm Sunday coloring sheet can help children grasp the concept of Jesus' humble arrival. Our free resource features a donkey, inviting young artists to create their interpretation of this symbol.
