Understanding Paper Squishies

Before you dive into the delightful world of paper squishies, let's quickly establish what they are. In essence, paper squishies are origami-inspired, paper-based models that, when completed, have a soft, squeezable texture; much like the plush toys they're named after.

Crafted using a single sheet of paper, these adorable figures are a unique blend of art and engineering. They're designed with special patterns that allow the paper to fold and crease in specific ways, resulting in a 3D shape that's shockingly squeezable.

Papercraft vs. Origami

While paper squishies share similarities with traditional origami, they're a distinct form of papercraft. Origami involves folding a single, uncut sheet of paper into a completed model. In contrast, paper squishies usually require two sheets of paper that are glued together at specific points before folding.

Additionally, origami designs often focus on simplicity and symmetry, whereas paper squishies embrace complex, asymmetrical designs. This results in intricate, lifelike food replicas that are as captivating as they are squeezing-worthy.

The Art of Paper Squishying

Creating a paper squishy might sound daunting, but with the right template and a bit of patience, it's surprisingly accessible. Many templates are sized for standard letter or A4 paper, making them beginner-friendly. And with no cuts involved, all you need is a pen, a pair of scissors, and some glue.

Once you've mastered the basics, you can branch out into more complex designs. There's even a community of paper squishy artists who design and share their own templates online, providing a wealth of inspiration and creativity.
