Plane Colouring In Pictures: Fun Activities for Kids

Have you ever found yourself daydreaming about adding a pop of color to those bland, black-and-white sketchings? Or maybe you're an artist eager to explore the world of digital art but intimidated by those complicated layers and blending tools? Enter plane coloring, a simple yet captivating medium that's perfect for both beginners and seasoned artists alike.

Plane coloring, also known as split-complementary coloring, is a coloring technique that involves filling in large, flat areas or "planes" of color, typically without the need for shading or blending. This method not only makes it easier for beginners to create beautiful, eye-catching artwork but also allows for a unique, graphic look that can be quite striking.

Understanding Plane Coloring

At its core, plane coloring is about simplifying color distribution. Instead of painting smooth gradations or blending a range of hues, plane coloring focuses on creating distinct, flat areas of color. This approach is reminiscent of the pop art movement from the mid-20th century, with its bold, vibrant colors and clean lines.

One of the keys to successful plane coloring is choosing your colors wisely. Most plane coloring artists work in a split-complementary color scheme, which uses two complementary colors along with their opposing colors on the color wheel. This high-contrast color combination creates a vibrant, dynamic look that's perfect for plane coloring.

Colors in Plane Coloring

A complementary color scheme uses colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel, such as blue and orange. In split-complementary, you take one of those complementary pairs and use the two adjacent colors instead. For instance, from the blue-orange pairing, you might use blue, yellow (next to orange), and red (next to blue). This typically results in more harmonious color combinations that are still vibrant and eye-catching.

When choosing colors for your plane coloring pieces, consider the mood you want to set. Cool colors like blues and greens can create a calming atmosphere, while warm colors like reds and oranges can make a space feel more inviting and energetic. Also, don't be afraid to experiment with different shades and tints to add depth and interest to your artwork.

Applications of Plane Coloring

Plane coloring isn't just for traditional artforms. This technique has crossed over into digital art, graphic design, and even fashion. With the rise of tools like Procreate and Adobe Illustrator, artists can easily create plane colored designs on their tablets or computers. This has led to an explosion of plane coloring-inspired art, from stunning digital illustrations to trendy graphic tees and home decor.

One reason for plane coloring's versatility is its ability to evoke a sense of playfulness and fun. The bold, colorful designs often remind people of classic childhood art or retro-inspired aesthetics. This makes plane coloring a popular choice for brands looking to connect with a younger audience or convey a sense of nostalgia. Plus, the technique's simplicity makes it easy to recreate and scale up, perfect for large format designs or murals.

Getting Started with Plane Coloring

If you're ready to dive into the world of plane coloring, here are some tips to get you started:

1. Start with simple shapes: Beginner plane coloring artists often start with basic shapes like circles, squares, and triangles. These shapes are easy to paint and allow you to focus on your color choices rather than getting bogged down in details.

Tools for Plane Coloring

2. Choose your medium: Plane coloring can be done with any number of art supplies, from watercolors and markers to digital software. Experiment with different mediums to see what you like best. For beginners, affordable art supplies like markers or colored pencils can be a great starting point.

3. Mix and match techniques: Plane coloring doesn't have to be confined to a single medium or technique. Many plane coloring artists incorporate other methods, like stamping, collaging, or stencil work, into their designs. Don't be afraid to mix and match different techniques to create a unique, personal style.

Practice and Experimentation

4. Study color theory: Familiarizing yourself with color theory can help you make more informed color choices in your plane coloring artwork. Consider taking an online course or reading a book on color theory to deepen your understanding.

5. Practice, practice, practice: Like any other art skill, the more you practice plane coloring, the better you'll get. Don't be afraid to make mistakes or experiment with new colors and techniques. Each piece you create is an opportunity to learn and grow as an artist.

Ultimately, plane coloring is about embracing the joy and creativity of art. It's about exploring color, playing with shapes, and creating something bold, vibrant, and uniquely yours. So, grab your markers, fire up your drawing tablet, or dig out your watercolor paints, and let plane coloring inspire you to create something amazing.
