Preschool Lesson: The 10 Lepers Story
The story of the ten lepers, as narrated in Luke 17:11-19, is a powerful lesson in faith, gratitude, and healing. It's a tale that has resonated with generations, teaching us valuable spiritual lessons that transcend time.
Jesus, in His ministry, encountered people from all walks of life. Among them were ten men afflicted with leprosy, a serious and isolating skin disease. They were outcasts, marginalized by society. Yet, they approached Jesus, demonstrating a glimmer of faith that would transform their lives.
The Power of Faith
The ten lepers understood the power of Jesus' ministry. They had heard about His miracles and healing, and they believed that He could heal them too. This faith, no matter how small, is the starting point of their journey to wholeness.
Jesus, noticing their state, tells them to go and show themselves to the priests, as per the Jewish laws for healing. This instruction was not a prerequisite for their healing but a demonstration of His faith in their faith. As they went, they were cleansed.
Faith in Action
Faith is not just about believing but also acting upon that belief. The ten lepers demonstrated this. They didn't wait for a physical touch or a ceremonial ritual. They believed Jesus' words and acted accordingly.
This acts as a powerful lesson for us. Faith is not just about believing in God's power but also acting on that belief. It's about living expectantly, trusting that God will fulfill His promises in His time and way.
The Importance of Gratitude
Out of the ten, only one, a Samaritan (a minority group), returned to thank Jesus. This shows that gratitude is not a natural response, but a choice, often influenced by our upbringing and cultural background.
This one leper, despite being a minority, showed an extraordinary level of gratitude. He fell at Jesus' feet, thanking Him. This act of gratitude modeling the deeper change that had occurred in the man's heart, not just his skin. It's more than just saying "thank you," it's about acknowledging God's goodness in all circumstances.
The Lesson of being Outsiders
The story of the ten lepers is also a stark reminder of how society often treats outsiders. Lepers were not just physically sick, but socially isolated, marginalized, and feared. This is not unlike how we treat certain groups in society today.
Jesus, however, treated them with kindness, compassion, and respect. He saw beyond their leprosy, He saw people in need of healing, love, and acceptance. This is a powerful reminder of how we should treat those who are different from us.
The Healing of Prejudice and Discrimination
The one leper who returned was a Samaritan, a group often despised by Jews. Yet, Jesus showed no prejudice. He healed him just like He healed the Jews. This teaches us about the universality of God's grace and healing.
Jesus' interaction with the lepers challenges us to check our attitudes towards the 'outsiders' in our society. It encourages us to embrace inclusivity, to love and accept everyone, just as Jesus does.
In the end, the story of the ten lepers is a timely reminder that faith, gratitude, and love know no bounds. It teaches us to believe, to act on our faith, to be grateful, and to extend that same love and compassion to others, especially those who find themselves on the fringes of society. May we strive to live out these lessons, not just in word, but in deed.
