Tips for a Winning Breyer Coloring Contest Entry

Creating an outstanding coloring contest entry requires a blend of artistic skill, creativity, and an understanding of what the judges are looking for. Here are some tips to help you create a winning Breyer coloring contest entry in 2024:

Choose Your Breyer Model Wisely

With hundreds of Breyer models to choose from, selecting the right one for your artwork can make a significant difference. Consider the horse's pose, color, and details to ensure it complements your creative vision.

Some models lend themselves well to certain themes or styles. For instance, a running horse might be perfect for a dynamic, action-filled scene, while a standing horse could work best for a more detailed, close-up portrait.

Experiment with Mediums and Techniques

The Breyer coloring contest invites participants to explore various artistic mediums and techniques. While markers and colored pencils are popular choices, don't hesitate to try paints, pastels, or even digital art. Experimenting with different mediums can help your artwork stand out and showcase your versatility as an artist.

Additionally, consider the technique you use to apply your chosen medium. You could create a realistic, detailed representation of your Breyer model or opt for a more abstract, stylized approach. The judging panel appreciates a diverse range of styles, so don't be afraid to push the boundaries of what a "colored horse" can look like.

Storytelling and Themes

Incorporating a theme or story into your artwork can help it resonate with judges and fellow horse lovers. With the 2024 theme focusing on Breyer's traditional horse models, consider the historical, cultural, or personal significance of the model you've chosen. Develop a narrative around its character, environment, or background to make your artwork more engaging and meaningful.

You could also draw inspiration from popular culture, fairy tales, or mythological creatures to create a unique and captivating piece. Just make sure your theme aligns with the contest's guidelines and is appropriate for all ages.
